Whether you are a new agent or are years into your career, it’s more than likely that you have wondered if you should work solo or on a team. This decision will make a huge impact on your career, so it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each.
To help you decide, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of working independently vs working on a real estate team:
The Advantages of Working Independently
- You have complete control over your brand and can market your homes and business the way you want (as long as it complies with your brokerage rules).
- You can set your own schedule without worrying about team meetings.
- You won’t have to share your leads with other real estate agents.
- You only have to split your commission with your Broker.
- You have complete knowledge of what’s happening in every sale or purchase, so no information falls through the cracks.
The Disadvantages
- You won’t have the groundwork laid for you like you would if you joined a team; you have to start from the ground up by yourself.
- You don’t have another team member to take over if you’re sick or want to go on vacation.
- You don’t have a team leader to hold you accountable or keep you on-track; you must be self-reliant and self-motivated.
- You are solely responsible for your business expenses.
The Advantages of Working on a Team
- You have an established team and client base to work with from day one.
- Experienced team members can provide you with immediate mentorship and advice.
- You have coworkers who can help out if you take a sick day or want to take time off.
- Your business expenses are shared between the team.
- More team members can generate more leads.
The Disadvantages
- Your commission is split between more team members.
- You may have to share your leads with your team members.
- You don’t get complete control over the brand or direction of the business.
- If you don’t work well with other team members, it can create a negative work environment and culture.
